Mike Murphy
Course: Standard CBA July 2017
Current Position: Brewer at Heretic Brewing

November 2017 wrapped up the CBA course for myself and our class. I had a great time during residency week and met a lot of fantastic people. The instructors were awesome and loaded with “Pro tips”. I would highly recommend this program for anyone looking for advanced brewery education.

My internship was at Heretic Brewing in Fairfield, CA. Steve Bartholomew, a 2015 ABG grad, was just finishing his second year at Heretic before moving on to another brewing opportunity. He immediately took me under his wing and tried to dump two years worth of knowledge on me over the next 5 weeks. We did everything; centrifuge operations, canning line, brew deck, keg washing, pallet wrapping, carbonation checks, fermentation checks, tank CIP/SIP (30bbl to 120bbl) and lab work.

It was crazy busy, not much standing around in an 8 hour brewery shift, but it was really satisfying and I learned a ton in those 5 weeks. At the conclusion of my internship Heretic offered me a full-time position and I could not be happier. Heretic’s owner, Jamil Zainasheff, should be familiar to anyone who has home brewed, I really look forward to learning all I can from him.

A special thank you to Steve, Christine, “V”, and the entire instructor staff at ABG. You folks were supportive, honest, and the most knowledgeable in the industry. There is no substitute for having a cadre of instructors that are successful and active in the industry on a day-today basis.

Chris Rahn
Course: Brewery In Planning IBS&E January 2015
Current Position: Owner and Head Brewer at Stubborn German Brewing Company

Chris and his wife opened Stubborn German Brewing Company in their hometown of Waterloo, IL in 2016.  It's a 3 barrel brewery focusing mainly on German beer styles, with some American styles as well.  He uses what he learned at the ABG every day - from yeast counting to sanitation techniques.  What he's learned has not only made him a better brewer to produce higher-quality beer, it's also saved the brewery money!  From learning how to increase efficiency (purchasing less grain) to growing his own yeast (which is very expensive to buy), he appreciates the skills that he's learned to be more self-sufficient.

Lawrence George
Current Position: Owner and Head Brewer at Brick & Feather Brewery

After completing the course in 2008, Lawrence interned at Russian River Brewing in Santa Rosa, CA. He then began a great paying gig as a shift brewer at Flying Fish Brewing in Cherry Hill NJ and then worked as a brewer at Berkshire Brewing Co in Deerfield MA.  2 years ago Lawrence and his wife opened up their own small operation in Turners Falls, MA. It's called Brick & Feather Brewery. They are having an absolute blast and are humbled and grateful that the public seems so interested in their beer, especially given the level of brewing talent in New England.

Jeremy Pryes
Current Position: Owner and Head Brewer at Pryes Brewing

Last summer, Jeremy Pryes opened Pryes Brewing’s new production facility and taproom on the banks of the Mississippi in Minneapolis, MN. In the beginning, Jeremy spent years perfecting his recipes before launching his first beer, Miraculum. Miraculum (Midwest IPA) went on to win back-to-back People’s Choice Awards at Mpls.St.Paul Magazine Harvest Beer Festival in 2014 and 2015.

Jeremy’s passion for brewing came from his love of building things from scratch, his culinary arts background and his first hand experiences with the local brewing scene. Jeremy also served as an official beer judge and as a board member for the local Community Hops Garden. Jeremy's tech background also helped him create a meticulous brewing methodology, tracking, measuring and honing his recipes. To further his education, Jeremy graduated from The American Brewers Guild in 2015.

Pryes Brewing Company is committed to creating balanced, stand alone beers. Each style grounded in its history, but inspired through an exploration of techniques and ingredients.

Pryes Brewing Company just won a Gold medal for their Barley Wine from best of craft beer awards!

Kevin Kozak
Current Position: Operations Officer at Front Street Brewery

I'm still with Front Street Brewery but in a different capacity than when I attended the American Brewers Guild. The owner of the brewery promoted me into upper management, so I'm now the Operations Officer. I help the GM run the whole show and work directly with the brewery and my new Head Brewer Christopher McGarvey (who will be attending ABG next year).

I'm also on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Craft Brewers Guild and an active member in my local Rotary Club. When not working, I try to get in as much fishing as I can and when I can't fish I enjoy spending quality time with my wife Emmaline and two dogs Edith and Madge.

Current Position: Head Brewer at Commonhouse Aleworks

I'm a proud graduate of the July 2011 California class. In the six years since I graduated from the American Brewers Guild, I have had the opportunity to brew in San Diego, CA at Stone Brewing, Portland, OR at Portland Brewing and in Charleston, SC at Westbrook Brewing. I am currently the head brewer for the soon to be opened brewery Commonhouse Aleworks, also located in Charleston, SC. The education and skills I learned at the guild have prepared me well for this new start up opportunity, and I have you to thank for providing a phenomenal education.
