The Greg Noonan New England Brewer’s Scholarship

The American Brewers Guild is proud to announce a scholarship opportunity. The Greg Noonan New England Brewer’s Scholarship will be awarded for the Intensive Brewing Science and Engineering class once per year. The scholarship is open to residents of New England, which includes the States of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Applicants must meet our prerequisites for admission into the program.

Greg Noonan (1951-2009) was the founder and brewmaster at the Vermont Pub & Brewery, 144 College Street, Burlington, Vermont, and the Seven Barrel Brewery, Route 12-A, West Lebanon, New Hampshire. He designed and installed three complete breweries, and consulted on the design and start-up of a dozen more, and frequently consults on recipe design. He was the key lobbyist responsible for the legislation that legalized brewpubs in Vermont (1985-88) and New Hampshire (1995). Mr. Noonan authored the newly revised brewers’ reference, the New Brewing Lager Beer (Brewers Publications, Boulder, CO, 1985, 1996, 2003), as well as Scotch Ale (Brewers Publications, Boulder, CO, 1993, 1998), and the Seven Barrel Brewery Brewers’ Handbook (GW Kent, Ann Arbor Michigan, 1996). He earned recognition as a Certified Judge by the Beer Judge Certification Program, was a frequent contributor to brewing periodicals, a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Brewing Techniques magazine, and had presented diverse technical papers at homebrewers’ and craftbrewers’ conferences. He was the 2005 recipient of the Russell Schehrer Award for Innovation in Brewing. In 2007, his lecture on Beer Styles was a highlight of the American Brewers Guild Summer class. This lecture, preserved on DVD, remains an important part of the educational material at the Guild.

This is a full scholarship providing full tuition to the Intensive Brewing Science and Engineering Class beginning in June of 2017. There is no re-imbursement of expenses associated with attendance of the compulsory final week of the program, at Drop-In Brewing Company located in Middlebury, VT, during the final week of the class in November of 2017. Applicants must fill out our school application in full and, in addition, submit essay answers to the following four questions.

1. Please describe your current qualifications and work, and your goals on entering the brewing industry. Where do you see yourself in 5 years, 10 years, and why?
2. Please relate how the Intensive Brewing Science and Engineering course will help you meet these goals.
3. Please relate what it is about craft brewing that leads you to the point of wanting to become a professional brewer and tell us what you have accomplished so far toward your goal.
4. Please indicate how you will help honor Greg Noonan’s legacy of openness, helping other brewers, and sharing knowledge for the betterment of all brewers and beer drinkers.

Please provide two letters of recommendation, with one letter being from a professional person, in support of your application along with relevant contact information for all parties. Please note that the content of your application and recommendations are very important, as this information is all the selection committee has to evaluate your candidacy.

Candidates applying for the Greg Noonan New England Brewer’s Scholarship must include a completed application, however the application fee of $75 is waived. The application will be made available by January 2017. Check this page for the application.
